A brand new form of live was discovered by the Doctor when a macrovirus infected the crew of Voyager. By using a being's growth hormone, the virus grew by a factor of billions, leaving the microscopic world and entering the macroscopic one. An antibody was discovered, and it was wiped out, but not before it attacked Janeway, who was the crew's only hope.
