Thoroughly Entertained

I guess it’s also past due time for an instalment of “On the Entertainment Front”

Firstly & most importantly……

Music

Matchbox Twenty have a new album coming out…..wohoo!  I was very keen on their last album though so I think I’m hoping more than expecting.  Not out until September though.
 North

For some inexplicable reason you can pre order it on itunes.  I’ve pre ordered it on Amazon because I want to make sure I get a physical copy of the album.  But you’re pre ordering because there are a finite number of copies which clearly isn’t an issue with digital copies.  Seems a bit nonsensical to me.

Movies

Currently watching Abduction – Jason Isaacs dies :( .  It’s actually watchable so far.

Watched Real Steel – “Your asshole deadbeat awol father will shape up if only you can spend some time bonding”.  It had Hugh Jackman in it and he’s nice to look it but really rather…..meh

Paranormal Activity 3 – “It’s okay for your new boyfriend to put cameras in your and your young daughter’s bedrooms to video tape things that go “bump” in the night”.  Seeing as how it was supposed to be a prequel – seemed a bit odd they’d go with the weird coven thing when it didn’t come into the other 2 movies at all.

Having a bit of a hiatus from reading “proper” books and getting through my massive pile of romance.  I say pile.  They’re all on my e-reader.  Hundreds.  It’s great!  Really need to get back to my sci-fi and fantasy list though.  I was making great in-roads into it there.

TV Shows

Got into a couple of new shows which have subsequently been cancelled

Awake – Jason Isaacs ahh yum

Alcatraz – nice to see Sam Neill quite Losty though I thought

Terra Nova – Sci-fi with dinosaurs.  Also lead guy – yum (no I don’t watch TV shows based on how hot I find the lead actor)

Ooh found a brilliant New Zealand show called the Almighty Johnsons.  Basically the Norse gods decided to live as humans, got kicked out when Christianity came in and fled to NZ.  But they only get their particular god when they turn 21.  Now that I have come across it they will probably cancel that as well.

Final Destination….can’t remember what number.  Basically you’re going to die!

Books

Oh! The Humanity! (What - The -Fuck?!)

Spidey
Soooo went to see Spiderman 3 last night. Really enjoyed it especially for the total what the fuck moments – like the dancing! People will probably hate it for that reason! I now what to see Pirate of the Carribean and Transformers (since it’s not a cartoon)

On the toothy front – seems to only hurt if Ive been eating which is an improvement on constant pain I guess.

Off work because it is a bank holiday (yipee!) and I think the parents might be going out (yipee) because I cleared out a couple of drawers of clothes and want to take them to the clothing bank and my car is blocked in by my mums. While I’m in the area where the clothes bank is I can pop into tescos and buy some chocolate and the new Mills & Boons (yippee doo!)

The invisible and the non-existent look very much alike

So…a little entertainment update. I’m hopefully going to see Spiderman 3 tonight Yay!

  • White Noise: The Light

Well I thought the original one was a hell of a lot better. Plus I wasn’t overly impressed when they bring religious crap into it. Of course considering that Nathan Fillion played a character called The Preacher in BtVS I enjoyed the coincidence. It also had Starbuck from the new (improved) BSG in it.

    Heroes

If you haven’t caught this series yet – turn into sci-fi or download it. It’s the fucking bomb. Yes it’s a bit X-Meny and I really really really loathe the Nathan Petrelli character but definitely must see TV. I especially love Hiro :)

    The Dresden Files

This is the TV series based on the Jim Butcher books which we know I just love to bits. I wasn’t sure at first but fortunately I’ve always been able to get over things not being the same as what Ive been reading. I’ve even warmed to Bob. However it might not make it to a second series which makes me sad inside :(

and what I nearly forgot was….

    Doctor Who

New series has just started and the Rose Tyler character has been replaced by Martha Jones. I infinitely prefer Martha Jones. Her character seems more intelligent and personally think the chemistry is better. They also seem to be focusing less on her and more on the Doctor (whereas Rose seemed to be the main character in the previous series).

  • The Darkness that Comes Before & The Warrior Prophet (Prince of Nothing) by R Scott Baker

I have to say I really was a bit disappointed with this series. Probably because there aren’t any really strong female characters and any that are strong are either prostitutes or whores. I haven’t found any of the characters particularily likeable either and the writing style is a bit hard to follow at times. I don’t know if I will continue reading the series.

Proven Guilty (Dreden Files) by Jim Butcher
Again loved it loved it loved. The storyline is definitely moving forward and in some respects I like where it’s going. My only concern is the increasing religious overtones that are being thrown in. Particularily when Michael and his family come up in the story line. Perhaps I’m just being a little sensitive so I will keep an open mind.

  • Open Door by Evanescence

I don’t think it’s as a strong as Fallen however there are a couple of songs on it I like. Particularily The Only One. It’s all terribly gothic ;)

    That’s all folks!

Them half sugar Breezers ain’t bad

    They’re quite tasty actually.

So I’m waiting for an auction to end in Ebay (for a ds lite would you believe) and I’ve been wanting to do a nice big update – so here goes. I’ll make some attempt to be chronological about it all.

So the whole computer hoopla was kind of pointless. The nice computer fella who came out and fixed the computer after it fell off the back seat of my car (shhhhhhhh we’re not telling them that) suggested trying a floppy disk to retrieve my dads files (the whole reason for the arsing about with the hard drive tower in the car in the first place) – which worked. I then had to do a system recovery so I lost everything else but eh….made Oblivion run a hell of a lot better.

They’ve shuffled us about a work a little bit. We were going to have to move up a section (ie a few feet) but fortunately someone figured out that made no sense. So we didn’t However we did get more surnames (we work alphabetically) which sucks ass and we also got the laziest fucking cunt in the whole branch. The desk was empty before and between the 3 of us we kept it up to date. He comes in at 9.30 (except for those days when he phones in to say he’ll be late) leaves at 3.30 and I have no fucking idea what he does in the intervening hours because there’s precious little work done I can tell you. He’s been out of his training for a few months but he’s still asking really basic questions. I can’t understand a word he says and I’m constantly going “what?” “pardon?” and he STINKS of BO…it’s ridiculous! He has a girlfriend! Men with partners should not stink of BO! ahem. I feel a bit better now.

Went to Blackpool on Wednesday for the day and managed to get hideously sunburnt on my shoulders!
We didn't go up this tower I did buy this tacky hat though

I’ve completed the main quest in Oblivion (today) so now I can just wander aimlessly around doing silly quests since I’m also Arch-Mage, Guild Master of the Fighters Guild, Guild Master of the Thieves Guild and Arena Champion! If only I could find out who gives me the jumbo potatoes quest. Here is a picture of my character (taken with a mobile as I haven’t been able to get the screen shot thing to work)
I should probably add that I cheated like crazy.

What else? Hmm I guess I should do an entertainment update?

I really really really want to see Pirates of the Carribean but I have been unable to get Ash to go due to financial issues. Might take myself off at some point. I don’t know why but I always feel a bit crap going to see a film by myself.

    • Watching:

  • X Men 3 – The Last Stand:

Not much to say. Good fun as long as you don’t think too much about it.

    • Reading:

  • Fool Moon (Dresden Files) – Jim Butcher
: Can’t praise this series enough! It’s a little like Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel (more Angel since it’s a little more adult). I say a little so if you hated BtVS or/and Angel don’t let that put you off!

Scattered Suns (Seven Suns Saga) – Kevin J AndersonI always feel like apologising everytime I say I like this series and I shouldn’t. It’s described as a soap opera in space and that’s what it is. Easy to read (despite the volume of main characters) and nothing too stretching.

Priestess of the White (Age of the Five) – Trudi Canavan
: Yes I did buy this book several months and yes I am only getting round to reading it now. I think it’s quite different from the Black Magician Series and I haven’t immediately fallen in love with it as I did with Black.

    • Listening to:
  • Eyes Open – Snow Patrol: I liked a couple of singles on this album but thought it would be one of those albums were you do only like the singles. WRONG! Ones to listen out for are Set the fire to the third bar and Make this go on forever as well as the gorgeous Chasing Cars.

Right-o I think that will do for now. My auction has nearly ended and I want to watch horse whisperer . I had a little panicky moment about 15 minutes ago when I could smell smoke and though my lap top had set fire to my bed. But no. Phew!

    Misfit

Tried posting a couple of days ago but it just wasn’t happening! I have been getting crap loads of spam to my blog recently (although it’s died down the last couple of days). I’m talking like 70 spam comments a day….ridiculous – of course they spam as much as they like cause I’m strictly approval only HAHAHAHA suck it up scum!

      Playing

Been desperately trying to play The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with no great success. Didn’t realise my computer wasn’t up to the job (graphics card/DVD drive)...however I did find this funky programme Oldblivion which will let you play. The characters sound like chipmunks but I’m not sure if that’s because of the programme or the dvd drive. Well anyways the game crashes quite a bit so I decided to try downloading the patch – unfortunately the oldblivion programme wouldn’t run anymore and I had to uninstall and reinstall the whole game – which now runs really really slowly. So I’ve uninstalled it again and deleted the Oldblivion programme – and then I’m going to reinstall/redownload. I get the feeling I’m on a lost cause – but I am persistant! I think I’m going to read the FAQ for oldblivion

      Listening

Well no new albums bought however I have just purchased these
just imagine a black nano with a semi clear rubber skin from ebay. :) I love ebay

      Reading

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke: A story about a girl who’s father can read characters and objects out and into books. It’s for young adults and a good read.

Saucer by Steven Coonts: A team of surveyors uncover a spaceship buried in solid rock. The story is basically an adventure story about people trying to get the UFO - really the only sci fi thing about it is the actual saucer.

      Watching

Da Vinci Code Don’t let the hype put you off. An enjoyable time killer which keeps pretty faithful to the book!

X-Men 3: The Last Stand Hoping to see this tomorrow. Got all the elements I like in a movie! Action, Science Fiction, good looking muscled blokes!

      Web Wise

Bebo.com: The next big net craze (after myspace?). You can also put in what school you went to. which I did, but I didn’t recognise the majority of names listed there!

I shall leave you with a picture of my dad – I had been looking for one of my brother as well cause they really do look alike sometimes.
Sometime in the late 60's early 70s

    Reading like a daemon

Dontcha love it when your computer decides to spontaneously reboot?

Back to work yesterday! Sadly I was just being screwed over tax and NI :(. I also seem to have this mountain of work which I just can’t seem to reduce. Blah!

    Anyways…on with the show

      Reading

The Hour of the Gate (Spellsinger Series) – Alan Dean Foster: To be honest I read this book a bit too fast to do it justice. I certainly enjoyed, thought it was a bit meatier than the first novel and a little more serious. I have the rest of the series to read now which I’m looking forward too.

Storm Front (Dresden Files) – Jim Butcher:
Well not quite finished this book. It’s a really good read. Think Columbo crossed with Charmed – only in a good way. Definitely recommend it!

      Watching

    SLither

Hmm weird sci-fi/horror/comedy. Reminded me a bit of Critters (humour wise) with typical dawn of the dead type gore. So I enjoyed it ;) . I especially liked the deer fighting back!

    April 25th, 2006

    Entertainment today

You know I really like the banner – it was completely unintentional – I tried putting a pattern on something with the width of 1 pixel (liquid satin I think) and this is the result!

Anyways – a little review on what I’ve been listening to/reading/watching lately.

      Watching

Silent Hill: Never played the games, although I did once see a “trailer” for the original game. I really liked the movie – it was just a lot of maddness! Hated Sean Beans accent – seriously you’re not american stop trying to an american accent! I wanted to post a picture of Pyramid Head but I couldn’t find one :(
    I wouldn't recommend a holiday there

Stargate: SG1: Season finale! I’m running a little BehInd in geTTing tO Review a numbeR somE American Television Shows. A brilliant finale it was too – total cliffhanger though :( and so I have to wait ages and ages and ages for the new season.

The House of Wax: What can I say? A bunch of irritating kids get killed by the Mercenary fella off of threshold. Worth it to see Paris Hilton get a pole through her head though ;)

      Reading

Finished reading these not so long ago

Tailchaser’s Song – Tad Williams: Basically it’s about cats. Cats have their own society you know and real cats don’t have human owners – makes them fat and lazy and uncat like. The protagonist goes off to find his girlfriend risking life and limb – who, it turns out, was just getting all fat and lazy and un cat like. Okay so it doesn’t sound great there but it was quite enjoyable.

The Forever War – Joe Haldeman: From what I understand this is a science fiction response to the Vietnam War. Reminded me very much of Starship Troopers and to some degree The Ender Series by Orson Scott Card (also worth a read). Really enjoyed the book I must say.

Sir Thursday – Garth Nix: Part 4 of the Keys to the Kingdom series. Yes it is a kids book – absolutely love the series though. Extremely well written and Sir Thursday is no exception. It’s kind of hard to explain the series though – basically involves a young boy called Arthur, the house, the architect and the days of the week. The first novel in the series is Mister Monday. In this book he’s drafted to the Architect’s army!

      Listening

Let Love in – Goo Goo Dolls: The new album from the Goos! Quite like some of the songs on it , the title song and better days. I’ll need to have a better listen though.
    Let Love in

That’s all for now. Not really been reading since I’ve been off work and all the good movies seem to be out in May (well I say good, I mean movies I want to watch ;) ).
